Noah Wilenius

Political scientist focused on the European Union, international relations, and public opinion

About

I hold a Master's degree in Political Science from Åbo Akademi University, with a minor in International Politics and Relations. My academic focus has been on the European Union, public opinion, and survey-based research methods. I also studied at KU Leuven in Belgium as part of my EU studies, and completed a Master's thesis on EU Member States' attitudes towards supporting Ukrainian refugees.

Professional Interests

I have a keen appreciation of global politics, particularly within the realms of the European Union, NATO, Finnish Foreign and Political Affairs. I am deeply interested in how various policies shape international relations and the intricate workings of new democracies. This interest drives my pursuit of positions that will allow me to engage in EU advisory roles and contribute to the international relations discourse.

Beyond Academia

My values lie in a strong Europe based on common European values of liberty and cooperation. Outside the lecture halls, I actively follow current world events and engage in discussions about emerging democracies and international policies. My hobbies include learning about different nations' elections and staying updated with the latest in global political developments. I enjoy trying international dishes whilst travelling. I've gained multiple connections around the world from my online gaming hobby and still keep in touch with close friends from Birmingham to Capetown or Frankfurt. I'm part of a political youth organization under the liberal party umbrella ALDE in Europe.

Future Aspirations

As I move forward, my goal is to immerse myself in environments where I can contribute to and learn from the field of international relations and EU policy-making. I am eager to bring my broad academic knowledge and enthusiasm for global politics to practical, impactful roles.

Recommendations

Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Riga

Stefan Eriksson, Director

Hereby it is confirmed that Noah Wilenius (born 20.08.99) was an intern at the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Riga, Latvia, during the period March 1 – June 30, 2021. NCM's Office was established in 1991, and its main task is to promote and strengthen Nordic-Latvian relations in all fields of society. The Office works in close cooperation with the Nordic embassies in Latvia. The conditions for the internship were far from optimal, since the pandemic led to strict limitations for the Office's possibilities to conduct its normal activities. In this situation, Noah has shown great adaptability and a good will to make the best of the situation, and in the end, he was able to give much added value to the Office's work. Among other things, he has been working with communication issues, and he has been compiling a monthly newsletter of Nordic activities in Latvia in English, showing a good ability to summarize the Office's and the Nordic embassies' work. Noah has shown interest in all fields of work at the Office and has worked closely with the advisors, for instance, supporting them in establishing contacts with Nordic experts for different cooperation projects. One example of an independent task that Noah has performed is preparation work for the production of video materials about Nordic cooperation. Noah has also taken part in a Latvian radio program, where he talked about the Finnish experience of democracy. Noah's work has been widely appreciated by all staff members at the Office, and his pleasant manners and personality would be an asset for any workplace. He is characterized by maturity, flexibility, and curiosity, and I would like to wish him all the best for the future.
